The Snowshoe Hare!

A snowshoe hare captured in Essex Montana -Staff Photographer

These small critters are prevalent in the area around Essex Montana. During the winter their coats are white to camouflage them against the snow, and their large broad hind feet provide traction, thus the name. During the summer, their coats change to a brown color in a process that can take up to ten weeks. In Essex, they can frequently be found sitting on trails, or wallowing in dust piles. They are herbivorous, feeding on plants in the cover of forest brush. They are found from the northern Untied States into Canada.
